-- Notes from material collected by Velma Eloise Kershner Bures
"A tale about the Bures clan from it's immigration from Germany about 1840..."
"The beginning of this story as far as we are presently concerned, starts with the disinclination of one Peter Bures of Kaschenbach, Germany born August 21, 1825, to remain in that militaristic country and serve his stint in the army, and then begin the usual economic struggle of trying to make a living in what seemed to him an already over-crowded situation. Not too much is now recalled about his early life, but we know that he came to the United States when about 18, found his way to Illinois and was soon engaged in farming."
-- Burres, Carla, comp., Pioneers, Preachers, Printers and Professors, (Fayette, MO, 1997), Page 1.
"Peter Bures deserted the Kaiser's army after receiving a sabre wound in manoeuvres and refused to tell his sons of his birthplace for many years for fear of being repatriated."
"He and his young family went by wagon train from Illinois to Edgar, Neb. in 1872 and homestead a quarter section where there was nothing but a buffalo wallow."
-- Geneological Data: Pittman, Bures (and Serini) compiled by Paul W Burres
"We do not know where he first settled but during the Civil War he was a Postmaster in Illinois across the river from St. Louis. We are not sure of the name of the town but both Alton and Boody were referred to in some papers. It may have been one of these. Alton is on the modern maps."
"In 1871 he went to Clay County Nebraska where he homesteaded. He moved his family there in 1872 and farmed until 1892 or 1893 when he moved to Edgar Nebraska. He lived there until his death, February 7, 1910."
-- Letter from Marlon T Bures to Mrs John N Ogle, 3 May 1972
"Peter Bures had a brother who was a sheep-raiser in Australia. Efforts to locate him or his heirs some years ago failed. He may have used a different version of the name."
"Peter also had a sister who came to Nebraska. She married a man named Mohang. He had two sons by a previous marriage. A cousin of the Bures's came from Germany and worked for the sister, and later married her step-son, a Moheng boy."
-- Letter from Marlon T Bures to Mrs John N Ogle, 3 May 1972

DIED.
"Peter Bures, 84 years of age, died at the home of Postmaster Anderson in Deweese Monday evening, of ailments incident to his advanced age, the immediate cause being pronounced heart failure. In the death of Mr. Bures Clay county loses one of her earliest pioneers. He came to this county in 1870 and homesteaded the land east of Edgar of which he was still possessed at the time of his death. After filing on his claim he went away and returned in the spring of 1871. Since then he has been a constant resident of this locality. Until the last ten years or so he has lived on this land, having added many acres to the original homestead. He finally retired, having acquired considerable property, and built a large house in the west part of Edgar, known as the Bures place where he lived for more than ten years. About a year ago the aged man decided to go to Deweese to live with his daughter, Mrs. S. H. Cowan, but after a short time he removed to another home in the same town and was boarding with the Anderson family. Mr. Bures was known to practically everybody in this county, having been a prominent farmer during the large part of the life time of most of the residents. He steadily prospered in his business ventures and the rise in the value of his real estate holdings made him a man of considerable wealth at the time of his death. Besides some 400 acres of land lying near Edgar on the east he had land in other states and property in Edgar, Deweese and other places. He was the father of seven sons and one daughter, all of whom are living near with the exception of one son who died some time ago in Kansas. The funeral was held in Deweese at the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. H. Cowan, burial in the Edgar cemetery."

"Rudolph and Louie went into partnership and became the money-makers of the family. They ran threshing outfits, a general store, the grain elevator, the bank and about the whole town of Angus, Nebraska for a number of years. They had the first garage in that part of the state and being natural mechanics they once manufactured an automobile that would actually run long before there was an automobile anywhere. They also built a cornpicker which operated on much the same principle as the McCormick people later successfully placed on the market but their interests were too varied to concentrate on any one thing to they soon dropped both the auto and cornpicker ideas, finding they could make more money running the store, bank, and elevator. Louis at 50 married a girl of 18 and Rudolph at a still later age married a lady who had been his nurse at the hospital where he was taking treatments for rheumatism which he was subject to."
